Nankin:

Nankin is the French translation of Nanjing. From now on, it is more current to hear Nanjing: who is related to the romanisation pinyin Chinese characters: 南京. The first Chinese character “Nan” means the South. The character “Jing” refers capital to the word. Nankin (or Nanjing) thus means the capital of the south. Indeed, it was capital of China on several occasions: from now on the Chinese capital is Beijing or Beijing.

However, Nankin did not always bear this name. Many names refer to the town of Nankin: Nanking for example, is resulting from another translation of Chinese that the pinyin. A recent film which recalls the massacre of Nankin through testimonys thus calls Nanking.

The old name of Nanjing: “Ning”

Formerly, the city bore the name of “Ning” which is written with a single character. This old way of calling Nankin (Nanjing) starts to disappear: however there remain traces of this name. Indeed, of many places and important arteries name “Ning” 宁.

The street “NingHaiLu” of Nanjing crosses the district Gulou de Nankin, a college is also called “寧”.

In a preoccupation with a simplification, there exists a way simplified and current to write “Ning” 宁 (on the right in black, simplified Chinese). In red in the center one can read “Nanjing” in Chinese character (there does not exist simplification to write Nankin).
